The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has officially started disbursing the newly approved monthly allowance of ₦77,000 to corps members, effective from March 2025.

This increase, which follows the Federal Government’s decision in September 2024, was delayed for several months, causing uncertainty among corps members.

The adjustment is in line with the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024, which led to an increase from the previous ₦33,000 allowance.

Despite the initial approval in September, it took an additional six months for the payment to be implemented, with Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, the Director General of NYSC, assuring corps members last week that the increase would commence in March 2025.

Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, confirmed that both current corps members and those who had served during the announcement would receive backdated payments to cover the delayed period.

On social media, corps members expressed mixed reactions. “Finally, the ₦77,000 allawee has landed! Better late than never,” tweeted @CorperRaye.

Another user, @NaijaCorper, shared, “After months of waiting, we can now breathe. Kudos to those who made this possible.”

However, some users, like @VoiceOfYouth, expressed frustration, commenting, “While we appreciate the increase, the delay was unnecessary. Hoping for more prompt actions in the future.”

The increased allowance is expected to help alleviate the financial burdens many corps members face, showing the government’s commitment to improving their welfare.
