The Coalition of Election Observers has commended the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC) for its efficient handling of the February 22 local government elections in Osun.
However, they raised concerns over the conduct of the Nigerian Police, who were accused of intimidating voters ahead of the polls.
During a press conference in Osogbo, Declan Ihekaire, Chairman of the Coalition of Election Observers, condemned the actions of the police, saying, “The role played before and during the election by the Nigerian Police… should not go unannounced.
The police, who should have been neutral, were seen issuing threats and dissuading some voters from coming out to exercise their franchise.”
Ihekaire further criticized the police for attempting to obstruct the election process by locking up the OSIEC Head Office. Despite the disruption, he praised OSIEC for distributing election materials to staff ahead of the police’s actions.
“The Nigerian Police had ulterior motives to prevent the scheduled election. However, kudos to OSIEC for their quick response and ensuring the election went ahead,” Ihekaire added.
While observers celebrated the peaceful conduct of the election, they urged dissatisfied parties to pursue legal means for redress.
“We congratulate all those who emerged victorious in this election… those not satisfied should seek redress in court rather than resorting to actions that could disrupt law and order,” Ihekaire concluded.
