Local government workers in Osun State have refused to comply with a 72-hour ultimatum issued by APC chairmen, demanding that they resume work amidst the ongoing political struggle between the APC and PDP over control of the local governments.

The conflict intensified after a Court of Appeal judgment supported the APC’s 2022 chairmen, while the PDP-led government conducted a new election, winning all the LGs. The situation has been marked by violent clashes, with several lives lost.

Christopher Arapasopo, Chairperson of the NLC Osun Chapter, emphasized, “We cannot allow workers to be working in an atmosphere of insecurity. Their safety is our priority.”

Despite the tensions, the APC chieftain, Jamiu Olawumi, claimed that most chairmen have resumed duties across all 30 LGs, urging workers to return to their posts or face job consequences.

The NLC has strongly opposed these pressures, urging political parties to follow the rule of law to avoid further violence.

“We will not be intimidated by any desperate attempts to silence us,” Arapasopo affirmed, while calling on President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the crisis.
