Pensioners in Lagos have appealed to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu over the delay in the implementation of the 2019 Minimum Wage Act, urging immediate action to clear their long-standing arrears.
The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Lagos Council, led by Rev. Oluremi Johnson, expressed dissatisfaction with the delay and emphasized the urgent need for timely pension payments.
“We are disappointed that, despite the Minimum Wage Act being passed on April 1, 2019, LASPEC only began implementation in early 2024,” said Johnson. “As of now, pensioners have only received payments for January, February, and March 2024. This leaves a backlog of 57 months of unpaid benefits, which is a huge burden on elderly citizens who depend on these funds.”
In response, LASPEC Director-General, Babalola Obilana, acknowledged the concerns raised by the pensioners.
“The Lagos State Government acknowledges the concerns raised by the Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP) and reaffirms its commitment to the welfare of pensioners as a top priority,” Obilana said.
He also reiterated the government’s openness to dialogue, adding, “LASPEC remains available to address grievances and provide clarifications as necessary.”
The pensioners are calling for a swift resolution to their grievances, as they continue to face financial strain due to the delayed payments.
