Peter Obi, former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has called for the immediate release of Yusuf Alabi, a 15-year-old boy detained at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre for over three months without trial.

Alabi, who gained national attention in 2023 for standing in front of Obi’s convoy during a campaign rally, was detained on charges of fighting and stealing.

In a post on his official X handle, Obi expressed his deep concern, stating, “I was made aware of the predicament of a young boy named Quadri Yusuf Alabi, who has been detained for over three months without trial, appeared in court for the first time in March, and still remains held in custody.”

Obi has been in contact with lawyer Barrister Inibehe Effiong, who has been working tirelessly to secure Alabi’s release. Obi urged authorities to uphold the rule of law, emphasizing, “I sincerely appeal to the police and other agents of the government to always operate within the law and the rules and stop weaponizing citizens, especially our youths.”

Alabi was reportedly accused by local youths of being a notorious fighter and thief, although he denies the accusations. His case has sparked widespread public attention, with many advocating for his swift release and justice.

Barrister Effiong confirmed Obi’s intervention, sharing, “Efforts have been intensified in the last 24 hours to ensure that justice is done and that Quadri Yusuf Alabi regains his freedom soonest. I will provide an update within the coming hours.”

Alabi’s next court hearing is scheduled for April 28, and his supporters remain hopeful that justice will prevail.
