Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has strongly endorsed President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, calling it a vital move for national security.
Speaking to journalists in Owerri, Uzodimma emphasized the critical role of Rivers in Nigeria’s economic stability due to its significant crude oil production.
“Prevention is better than cure,” Uzodimma said, highlighting that the state of emergency aims to prevent potential violence and unrest stemming from unresolved political tensions. He also commended the National Assembly for supporting the President’s decision, stressing the need to uphold law and order.
The emergency rule follows a series of events, including the demolition of the State House of Assembly in December 2023 by Governor Siminalayi Fubara, which left the legislature inactive for over 14 months. Despite previous interventions, the crisis persisted, sparking concerns about governance and security in the state.
Uzodimma, who chairs the Progressive Governors’ Forum, assured that the forum backs the President’s actions in securing the nation’s stability.
President Tinubu emphasized that the state of emergency is necessary to restore democratic processes and address security challenges in Rivers State, ensuring the protection of Nigeria’s economic interests.
