In a significant move to support Nigeria’s armed forces, the House of Representatives Committee on Finance has proposed a tax exemption on the personal income of military personnel.
The proposal was unveiled on Thursday, March 13, 2025, during the clause-by-clause consideration of four tax bills forwarded to the parliament by President Bola Tinubu in October 2024.
Chairman of the Committee, Abiodun Faleke, emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating, *“Mr. Speaker, honourable colleagues, the committee proposed that personal income of military personnel should be exempted from tax. This is because of the critical nature of their assignment.”* The proposal received unanimous endorsement from lawmakers.
The move comes as part of broader efforts to recognize the sacrifices made by military personnel in safeguarding the nation. Further details on the implementation and scope of the tax exemption are expected to be released in the coming days.
