The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) in Rivers State has issued a strong warning over the non-payment of salaries to local government workers, threatening to withdraw its members’ services if the issue is not resolved by the end of March 2025.

Local government workers have not received their salaries since February, and the NLC is demanding that both the arrears and the implementation of the minimum wage be addressed promptly.

At a press briefing in Port Harcourt, NLC State Chairman, Alex Agwanwor, emphasized the urgency of the matter, stating, “Salaries of all public workers in the Rivers State Civil Service should be paid on or before the end of March.”

Agwanwor further stressed that if local government workers’ salaries, along with the implementation of the minimum wage, were not addressed by the end of the month, the NLC would initiate steps to withdraw its members from services in all local governments and public sectors.

He added, “Workers are not partisan and should not suffer due to the political crises in the state. We demand the immediate payment of salaries and implementation of the minimum wage at local government levels.”

The NLC also expressed its alignment with the national leadership of organized labor regarding the state of emergency in Rivers State, further reinforcing the call for swift action from the state government to prevent any disruption to essential public services.
