Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has credited the judiciary and divine intervention for his survival in the face of a 2023 impeachment plot.
Aiyedatiwa, who was serving as acting governor during the illness of late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, was targeted by the 10th Ondo State House of Assembly, which alleged gross misconduct against him.
In his address at the Body of Benchers’ inaugural Annual Lecture in Abuja, Aiyedatiwa reflected on the events, stating, “After God, the rule of law was instrumental in my survival. It has further strengthened my belief in its importance.”
He emphasized that the timely intervention of the courts and the rule of law helped him avoid impeachment, noting, “Perhaps I would not be standing before you today without the rule of law.”
The Governor also praised the judiciary as the “true last hope of the common man,” reiterating his administration’s commitment to upholding the rule of law in Ondo State. He added, “This has strengthened my resolve and confidence in the judiciary, and I must say that it has influenced our bold agenda to transform Ondo State.”
Aiyedatiwa also called for the Nigerian judiciary to embrace technological advancements, particularly artificial intelligence, to improve justice delivery.
“As we embrace rapid technological advancements, your role as custodians of justice must evolve to meet the demands of the modern era,” he concluded.
