The legal battle over the reinstatement of Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 16th Emir of Kano continues as the Court of Appeal in Abuja has referred the case to the Supreme Court.

On Tuesday, the appellate court set aside prior rulings regarding Sanusi’s reinstatement, following the transmission of the case record to the apex court.

A three-member panel, led by Justice Biobele Abraham Georgewill, ruled in favor of the appeal filed by the Kano State Government, which had sought to halt the enforcement of earlier orders.

The court agreed to the withdrawal of an application by the state government, pending the Supreme Court’s review.

The Kano State Government, through its lawyer Ibrahim Wangida, informed the court that all legal procedures had been followed, including the submission of the appeal to the Supreme Court.

Wangida emphasized that the legal process now necessitated a stay on the execution of the March 14 ruling, which had validated Sanusi’s reinstatement.

“The transmission of the appeal record to the Supreme Court operates as a stay of any further action on the Court of Appeal’s ruling,” Wangida explained.

In a separate legal dispute, Sanusi’s reinstatement followed the passage of the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Law 2024, which ousted Aminu Ado Bayero as the 15th Emir of Kano. Bayero, who has since returned to Kano under heavy security, continues to legally challenge his removal.
