Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has inaugurated the newly completed Abule Egba Bus Terminal in the Orile-Agege Local Council Development Area, aimed at improving mass transportation and connectivity within the state.
This announcement was accompanied by a 30% reduction in fares for the Lagos Red Line rail service.
Speaking at the event on Tuesday, Sanwo-Olu emphasized the strategic importance of the terminal in enhancing mobility for residents. “Today, I commissioned the newly completed Abule Egba Bus Terminal… designed to enhance seamless mass transportation from this suburb to other parts of our city,” he stated.
The terminal, located near the Lagos Red Line corridor, provides an efficient transition for passengers to switch between buses and trains. “This strategic bus terminal… provides a convenient route for passengers to board and exit buses and connect to other transportation options,” Sanwo-Olu added.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to modernizing Lagos’ transport infrastructure, aiming to improve the commuting experience. “This project marks another significant milestone in my administration’s commitment to upgrading Lagos’ public transportation system with modern, sustainable infrastructure,” he said.
In a bid to make transport more affordable, Sanwo-Olu also announced a fare reduction for the Red Line rail service, bringing costs down from N1,500 to N1,000. “To further improve access to intracity rail transport, I announced a 30% reduction in fares,” the governor explained.
Additionally, he revealed plans for new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and electric buses, expected to arrive by the third quarter of this year, which will expand the bus fleet and reduce waiting times. “We expect new CNG and electric buses… to expand our fleet, increase bus availability, and reduce waiting times at bus stops,” Sanwo-Olu said.
He urged residents to take responsibility for the maintenance of the terminal and other public infrastructure, stressing the importance of community ownership. “Please take pride in it, protect it, and ensure it remains safe from harm,” he concluded.
