Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has called on the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to intensify efforts in fostering regional integration, economic prosperity, and sustainable development across West Africa.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of a 3-day parliamentary seminar in Lagos to mark 50 years of ECOWAS and 25 years of the ECOWAS Parliament, Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the need for stronger collaboration among member states.

“We must strengthen our institutions to ensure they are responsive, inclusive, and effective,” he said. “We must deepen economic integration by removing barriers to trade, investment, and the free movement of people.”

Sanwo-Olu also highlighted the importance of addressing security concerns, climate change, and empowering the youth.

“We should promote peace and security by addressing the root causes of conflict and fostering dialogue and reconciliation. We must also empower our youth by investing in education, innovation, and job creation.”

He reaffirmed Lagos’ commitment to supporting ECOWAS in overcoming these regional challenges. “Lagos remains committed to supporting ECOWAS in its mission to deepen integration and improve the lives of our people,” he said.

The Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Hadja Memounatou Ibrahima, acknowledged the significant achievements of the community over the past 50 years, particularly in economic growth and peacekeeping efforts.

She also underscored the importance of celebrating ECOWAS’s Golden Jubilee in Lagos, as the city holds a historical significance as the host of the Treaty of Lagos.

The seminar, themed “ECOWAS at 50, Parliament at 25: Reflections of the Community Parliament toward Attaining Regional Integration Achievements,” serves as a platform for reflecting on the strides made and charting a path forward for a unified, prosperous West Africa.
