Kogi Central Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, is set to challenge her six-month suspension in court, following her face-off with Senate President Godswill Akpabio over seating arrangements in the chamber.
The suspension, which came after Akpoti-Uduaghan accused Akpabio of sexual harassment, has sparked controversy, with critics arguing that she was denied fair hearing.
Her lawyer, Victor Giwa, called the suspension “illegal” and argued that it violated an existing court order.
“The suspension is void, it cannot even take any effect,” Giwa told The PUNCH, emphasizing that the Senate ignored the court’s directive. He confirmed that they would return to court to challenge the Senate’s actions.
The suspension was imposed after Akpoti-Uduaghan failed to attend an ethics committee hearing where allegations against her were considered.
The committee recommended her removal over breaches of Senate rules, including her public dispute with Akpabio.
The Senate adopted the report, which also called for her salary and security details to be withdrawn during the suspension period.
Political figures and organizations, including the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and opposition parties, have criticized the decision, questioning the fairness of the process. “She was not given the opportunity to properly defend herself,” NBA Chairperson Huwaila Muhammad said.
