In a historic move, Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has unveiled completed infrastructure projects aimed at transforming Okpoko, the state’s largest slum.

As part of his third anniversary in office, the governor inaugurated new roads, a general hospital, solar-powered street lights, and pipe-borne water, marking a major step in improving the quality of life for Okpoko’s residents.

The newly commissioned 2.9-kilometre Mgbuka-Amazu-Emekekwe Road and the 1.345-kilometre Union Street-Ojoto Street Junction-Adazi Ani Street along Owerri Road have brought substantial change to the community.

These projects are part of a larger plan to build 19.9 kilometres of tarred roads in Okpoko, with 15.62 kilometres completed and more roads under construction.

Governor Soludo expressed his satisfaction, noting that Okpoko, once plagued by poor infrastructure and neglected by previous administrations, has now become a model for urban renewal.

“Three years ago, I visited Okpoko as a newly inaugurated governor. Back then, the roads were impassable, and the community lacked basic amenities. Now, with new roads, a hospital, water, and lights, the lives of the people are being transformed,” Soludo said.

He added, “This is just the beginning. Okpoko has not seen anything yet. We’re committed to improving infrastructure and making life better for the people.”

For decades, Okpoko residents suffered from lack of proper healthcare and essential services.

A community leader, Chief Mike Okorie, praised the governor’s efforts, stating, “In my lifetime, I have never seen such transformation. The streets are lit, health services are now available, and crime is down thanks to the new infrastructure.”

Resident Uchenna Udeh also shared his excitement, saying, “For the first time, we have a fully functional general hospital and reliable public healthcare. This is a huge win for us.”

The development is being hailed as a turning point for Okpoko, where security has improved and economic activities are now thriving.

Governor Soludo’s initiatives have brought hope and tangible progress to a community long forgotten.
