The South-South Governors’ Forum has called on President Bola Tinubu to rescind the state of emergency declared in Rivers State, emphasizing that the political situation in the state does not meet the constitutional criteria for such a declaration.
Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa, speaking on behalf of the forum, pointed out that Section 305(3) of the Nigerian Constitution outlines specific conditions under which a state of emergency is warranted, including war, external aggression, and public disorder.
“We believe that the political disputes in Rivers State between the Governor and the House of Assembly should, ideally, be resolved through legal and constitutional means rather than by executive fiat,” said Diri.
The South-South governors expressed concern over the suspension of democratic institutions in the state, urging a peaceful resolution to the crisis.
“As a path forward to reduce tensions and establish a foundation for enduring peace, the South-South Governor’s Forum proposes the rescission of the state of emergency,” Diri added.
The governors reaffirmed their commitment to securing peace within their states and called for calm, urging all parties to uphold the constitution and avoid escalating tensions.
