President Bola Tinubu has declared April 7 as National Police Day, a new annual celebration to honor fallen heroes of the Nigeria Police Force and acknowledge the efforts of its personnel.

The announcement was made by Vice-President Kashim Shettima during the inaugural National Police Day celebrations, held on Monday at the Eagle Square in Abuja.

“April 7 is not merely a date on the calendar. It is a symbol of our enduring partnership and respect for the Nigeria Police Force,” President Tinubu stated.

He emphasized his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of police officers, noting the provision of modern tools, technology, and better living conditions.

“We are determined to equip you with modern tools and technology to enhance your effectiveness in combating crime,” Tinubu affirmed, also pledging to address the housing, healthcare, and educational needs of police families.

The President reiterated the importance of a well-trained, well-equipped, and motivated police force in ensuring the security and stability of the nation. “A secure Nigeria is vital for our collective prosperity,” he declared.

Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, commended the establishment of the National Police Day, highlighting its role in remembering fallen heroes and promoting excellence within the force.

“This day offers an opportunity to acknowledge the heroics of men and women of the force, both within the country and abroad,” he said.

The event featured various ceremonial highlights, including a guard inspection, a procession by tactical units, and a silent drill by police officers.

The National Police Day initiative is seen as a significant step in boosting morale and fostering a deeper connection between the police force and the public.
