US Congressman Danny Davis has written to Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, urging the establishment of a Nigerian consulate in Chicago, Illinois, to better serve Nigerians in the Midwest.

The congressman emphasized that Chicago’s strategic location would provide vital consular services to Nigerians across multiple states, including Minnesota, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Iowa, reducing the burden of long-distance travel.

Davis, representing Illinois’ 7th District, explained that Chicago’s position would boost trade, investment, and cultural exchanges between Nigeria and the US.

“Establishing a consulate in Chicago would strengthen these bonds, enhance diplomatic relations, and create new opportunities for trade, investment, and cultural exchange,” he said in his letter dated March 17, 2025.

The call for a consulate in Chicago is backed by several Nigerian diaspora advocates, including the General Coordinator of the Nigeria Diaspora Initiative (NDI), Tunji Quadri.

Quadri highlighted that the consulate would provide essential resources for the Nigerian community, facilitating passport renewals, visa applications, legal assistance, and document certifications. He emphasized that easier access to these services would improve business relations and reduce unemployment in Nigeria.

Dr. Shaffideen Amuwo, a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Illinois Chicago, echoed the sentiment, stating, “We are advocating for this consulate out of our deep love for Nigeria. It would make the embassy more efficient and better serve the needs of Nigerians in the region.”

Aviation expert Tolani Banire also supported the initiative, saying, “The consulate will enhance diplomatic and consular services for Nigerians abroad, ensuring that they can access services without needing to return home.”

The proposal has gained significant traction, with Davis pledging his support to make the consulate a reality and help further strengthen Nigeria-US relations.
