Mudashiru Obasa has been reinstated as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, following the resignation of Mojisola Meranda. Meranda stepped down from the position on Monday, during a plenary session, paving the way for Obasa’s return to the leadership role.
In January, Obasa was impeached by the lawmakers, who cited several allegations including poor leadership, high-handedness, and abuse of office. Over 90% of the lawmakers had supported the impeachment. Obasa, however, rejected the process, asserting that constitutional procedures had not been followed and denying the corruption claims against him.
During his reinstatement, Obasa thanked his colleagues and called for unity, stating, “We want to assure Lagosians that we have resolved and determined to serve their interest and protect their interest always. Our major responsibility is to represent them, and that’s what we have been doing.”
In an effort to resolve the leadership crisis, key figures from the All Progressives Congress, including former governors Bisi Akande, Segun Osoba, and Akinwunmi Ambode, facilitated a reconciliation, which led to Meranda’s resignation and Obasa’s reinstatement.
Obasa closed his remarks with a call for peace, saying, “Today is not the day for speech making but to celebrate my colleagues and thank them for all they have been doing. I am sure we will continue to work together in peace, love and harmony.”
