The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has condemned the assault on one of its monitoring officers by commuters who attempted to evade fare payment on a BRT bus.
The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, saw passengers traveling from Abule Egba attempt to tap out at Ikeja Along, instead of the designated National Bus Stop.
In a statement, LAMATA spokesperson Kolawole Ojelabi described the altercation: “Following the resistance of the monitoring officer, the commuters handled him roughly with his clothes torn, his phone and bag damaged, and left him with a swollen eye.”
LAMATA expressed growing concern over the increasing frequency of such attacks. “We would not tolerate any attack on our staff, and those caught will face the full weight of the law,” Ojelabi stressed, emphasizing the agency’s commitment to ensuring a safe and abuse-free work environment for its employees.
