Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has explained why his administration will not permit the proposed pro-Wike rally in the state, emphasizing the need to maintain peace and security amid the ongoing political situation in neighboring Rivers State.

Speaking during the 158th State Executive Council meeting in Yenagoa, Governor Diri reiterated that while his government supports the constitutional right to peaceful assembly, the rally planned by The New Associate group could destabilize the state.

The group, which expressed solidarity with the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, intended to hold the rally in Yenagoa, the state capital.

“We are not a government that goes against the rule of law,” Governor Diri stated. “However, as the chief security officer of this state, I must ensure the peace of Bayelsa is not disturbed by any external influence. Rivers and Bayelsa are sister states, and the situation in one affects the other.”

Governor Diri noted that with a state of emergency declared in Rivers by President Bola Tinubu, it would be unwise to allow any rally related to the ongoing crisis. He said, “The political climate in Rivers could have a ripple effect on Bayelsa, and any rally related to that could pose a security risk.”

While Diri made it clear that he respects the right to peaceful assembly, he stressed that the security and stability of the state must take precedence. “We will not allow any activity that could destabilize our environment,” he added.

The governor further highlighted the importance of adhering to proper protocols when organizing rallies, citing the example of First Lady Remi Tinubu, who informed the state government of her visit scheduled for Thursday.

Governor Diri concluded by calling on Bayelsans to work together in maintaining law and order and ensuring the continued peace and security of the state.
