In an exclusive interview with The Punch, Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State shared insights on his administration’s progress, challenges faced, and the role music plays in his leadership style. Known for his signature dance moves and dynamic personality, Adeleke reflected on his efforts to transform Osun, touching on key projects, regional security concerns, and his close relationship with music star Davido.
“Without blowing my trumpet and with all modesty, Osun is indeed better off,” Adeleke remarked when asked about his administration’s impact after over two years in office. He highlighted major improvements in infrastructure, workers’ welfare, and the introduction of the Imole Free Medical Care programme for pensioners, which has benefitted around 27,000 elderly citizens.
The governor didn’t shy away from acknowledging the hurdles he faced, such as the political immaturity of the last administration. “The first major issue was the bitter politics and immaturity exhibited by the last administration,” he said, recalling the looting and vandalism of government property as his administration took over.
Despite the allegations of the opposition, Adeleke strongly denied claims that his government had plunged Osun into debt. “I have rejected loans and financial offers from many banks. I don’t want to add to the state’s financial burden,” he asserted, emphasizing his commitment to prudent financial management.
Adeleke also addressed accusations of nepotism, clarifying that his government’s appointments have been diverse and fair. “Of the first four people I appointed when I became governor, only one is from Ede, and all of them are Muslims,” he explained, defending the transparency of his leadership.
On security concerns, particularly the reported incursion of bandits into the South-West, Adeleke reassured that efforts are in place to enhance regional safety, including the strengthening of Amotekun and coordination with other governors. “Our security agencies, including Amotekun and the DSS, are doing a commendable job,” he noted.
Speaking on his family’s political legacy, he expressed gratitude for the unwavering support from his loved ones, especially his brother, Dr. Deji Adeleke, who funded his election. “My brother has never demanded a single kobo from me, nor has he asked for any contracts,” he shared, highlighting the integrity and strong family bond that drives his leadership.
Adeleke also spoke warmly about his close relationship with music star Davido, referring to him as his son. “Biologically, he is my cousin, but to me, he is a son,” he said, recounting how Davido supported his 2022 gubernatorial campaign and how their bond has remained strong over the years.
On his signature love for dancing, Adeleke explained, “Dancing is part of me… It brings joy to many people.” He noted that, rather than detracting from his credibility, his dance moves have enhanced his popularity, particularly on social media.
When asked about balancing governance with family life, Adeleke praised his wives for their support. “Governance is a huge sacrifice, but we are managing it well,” he said, acknowledging the demands of his leadership role.
Through his lively and candid conversation, Adeleke showcased a leadership style marked by pragmatism, transparency, and a deep connection with his roots and family. With a focus on infrastructure, worker welfare, and effective governance, his administration continues to shape Osun’s future.
