Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has launched a food distribution program to aid 250,000 flood-affected beneficiaries across the state, with plans to reduce palliative distribution by 90%.
During the event, Governor Zulum highlighted the ongoing impact of the devastating floods that hit Maiduguri, Jere, and other communities last year.
“Many families are still counting their losses,” Zulum said, emphasizing his commitment to providing relief for those who lost homes, livelihoods, and loved ones in the disaster.
As part of the Ramadan food distribution initiative, 100,000 beneficiaries in Maiduguri and surrounding areas will receive food assistance, alongside an additional 150,000 people from 25 local councils. Zulum added, “This support is aimed at alleviating the suffering of our most vulnerable people.”
In a significant policy shift, Governor Zulum also announced a 90% reduction in the distribution of palliatives, which were previously allocated to Boko Haram victims. He attributed this change to a successful harvest in the state, stating, “Agriculture is not just a means of survival; it is a tool for economic empowerment.” The governor emphasized the state’s focus on fostering self-sufficiency and sustainable growth through agricultural support programs.
Zulum expressed gratitude to the Federal Government, neighboring states, and various organizations for their continued support, noting, “Their generosity has been a source of great encouragement.”
The event was attended by several government officials, including Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan and Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly.
