The Lagos State Government has acquired 84 hectares of land in Osogbo, Osun State, to cultivate crops and meet the food needs of residents.
The Commissioner for Agriculture, Gbolahan Lawal, who disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, September 1, 2019, noted that the farm would ensure food security for Lagosians.
“Lagos State, with a population in excess of 21 million people and a daily influx of people from diverse places, has a serious agricultural land constraint and being a coastal state, the available land for agriculture has been drastically reduced due to urbanisation,” the commissioner added.
He explained that the state government intended to build another abattoir along the Epe-Lekki corridor that would cater to the meat needs of people in that area of the state.
Lawal said he planned to build an agribusiness application that would not only monetise everything done in the ministry but also support the value chain platform.
“Some of the objectives of the app are that it will groom start-up entrepreneurs, small and medium enterprises, and agro-tech innovators, among others, in addition to promoting the establishment of agribusiness ventures through a vast pool of commercialised agro-technology from the research and development institutes,” he added.
