In response to a forecast by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, or NlMET, the Ekiti State Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources has taken preventive steps to protect the lives of citizens and public infrastructures in the state. In its most recent forecast, NlMET had anticipated significant rainfall and possible flooding in Ekiti and twelve other states. Erelu Tosin Ajisafe, the Ekiti State Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, responded by urging citizens to heed the warnings seriously in a statement. He also mentioned that the state government has taken action to prevent any unfavorable weather conditions.

She said the Ekiti government has approved a work plan to clear blocked drainages and waterways in Ado, Ikere and Ekiti South-West Local Government and the debilitation of lined drains, culverts and access slabs in Ado, Ikere and Irepodun/Ifelodun Local government, which are considered high-risk flood zones between June to October 2024.

The Commissioner explained that the Ministry has also launched a public awareness campaign to educate residents on flood safety measures. This campaign involved information dissemination through radio announcements, social media, and community engagement.

She stated that the Ministry was coordinating advocacy efforts and mitigation measures, particularly in Ado Ekiti, and that it was closely collaborating with appropriate Ministries, Departments, Agencies, and local governments to identify flood-prone regions under their purview. “The Ekiti State Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources is steadfast in its dedication to putting the security and welfare of its citizens first by collaborating with pertinent MDAs, LGAs, and LCDAs so that the general public can efficiently lessen the effects of potential flash flooding and guarantee prompt responses to any emergencies that may arise,” the statement read.
