The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued an urgent heat stress alert for residents in 19 states, including the southeast and coastal areas, due to rising temperatures and high humidity expected over the next three to four days.
The states most affected include Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Oyo, Kogi, Nasarawa, Benue, Enugu, Anambra, Abia, Ebonyi, Cross River, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), along with other vulnerable regions in the southwest, coastal areas, and parts of Taraba, Adamawa, Plateau, Kaduna, Zamfara, and Sokoto.
According to NiMet’s report, “The rising temperatures and high humidity levels may cause thermal discomfort across several regions.” The agency cautioned that residents could face health risks such as fatigue, irritability, reduced focus, and lower productivity during this period.
“Stay cool by using fans, air conditioning, or shaded spaces, and wear breathable clothing,” NiMet advised. “Drink plenty of water, avoid peak sun hours (12 PM – 3 PM), and use sun protection like hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen.”
Residents of the affected regions are urged to take the necessary precautions to stay safe and minimize health risks as the heat intensifies.
