Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has vowed to continue his fight against calls for his resignation or impeachment, as political tensions rise in the state.
A faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC), loyal to former Governor Nyesom Wike, is pushing for the governor’s removal, accusing him of various alleged offenses.
Despite the mounting pressure, Governor Fubara has assured his supporters that he will not be deterred. “I want to assure you, it doesn’t matter what the situation might be today, we will come up again stronger and better,” Fubara declared.
He emphasized the importance of peace and called for unity in the face of political unrest, warning that “if anything happens, we are the greatest losers.”
The APC faction, led by Chief Tony Okocha, has been vocal in its opposition, claiming that Fubara’s governance has been ineffective and disrespectful to President Bola Tinubu. Okocha stated, “The options before Siminalayi Joseph Fubara are two: he should honourably resign or be impeached because he has run the state aground.”
In contrast, the Rivers State government and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have dismissed the impeachment threats as baseless.
PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, criticized the opposition for attempting to create unnecessary political tension, urging them to focus on national issues instead.
“The man you are talking about has a lot of issues to deal with… Impeaching a performing governor like the Rivers State governor is not a tea party,” said Timothy Osadolor, the PDP Deputy National Youth Leader.
Amid the political standoff, Rivers State Commissioner for Information, Joseph Johnson, rejected Okocha’s impeachment calls, labeling him an “impostor” after a court ruling removed him from his position as APC chairman in the state.
