The Zamfara State chapter of the National Association of Residents Doctors joined their counterparts in the nationwide indefinite strike, thereby paralysing medical services in the state on Wednesday and urging the federal government to meet their demands.

Addressing newsmen in Gusau, the state capital, the General Secretary of the association, Dr Ibrahim Dauran, explained that the branch has obeyed the directive of the national executives of the association and observed the industrial action.

“Failure of the government to implement the agreement reached includes issues of hazard allowances, upward salary review, and medical residency training funds 2023, among others,” he said.

Dr Dauran appealed to the Federal Government to meet the doctors’ demands by approving and implementing at least 80% of their demands.

“My call on the Federal Government is that, as their slogan is to allow the poor to breathe, if they prolong this strike, they will surely suffocate the poor man. They should also allow us, the doctors, to breathe,” he said.

He further noted that it was not their intention to embark on an indefinite strike.

“If government can settle our demands, we will without waste of time call off the indefinite strike action,” he said.
